1) Modern Day Macrobiotics: Transform Your Diet and Feed Your Mind, Body and Spirit
Brief Notes:
Modern Day Macrobiotics does a brilliant job in distilling the essence of macrobiotics and making it relevant to modern life.
Author Simon Brown, a nutritionist and macrobiotic teacher, talks about the living energy in whole foods and explains how the glycemic index and glycemic load, alkalinity, potassium and sodium content in foods affect our optimal health.
Modern Day Macrobiotics was the first book that introduced me to macrobiotics. Contains over 80 easy-to-prepare healthy recipes. The suggested menus for healing and detoxification are worth more than the price of this book.
“I was thrilled to get a copy of Modern Day macrobiotics last year considering how the book does such a wonderful job in bringing macrobiotics into the modern ages.
It covers the latest in scientific dietary theories so you are left with an understanding in how to incorporate these into your practice of macrobiotics.
It also does a wonderful job in helping you to understand how to make macrobiotics work best for you, how do you want to live your life, and how to best adapt it around that” – a reader’s comment
2) 50 Secrets of the World’s Longest Living People
Brief Notes
Human beings can live up to 120 years old. Communities with a high proportion of centenarians do exist. Beare sets out to uncover the secret to longevity among the world’s five longest-living communities.
Pick up this book to uncover the eating habits of the world’s longest living people.
“I found this book to be well-written and informative. I liked how the author started the book with a broad-based look at the world’s cultures that have the longest living people in them, and then in the second section, broke this information down into the 50 “secrets” that was common to all of them” – a reader’s comment

“I borrowed this book from the library and cooked three recipes from it. All of them were very good. I have shelves of cookbooks but few of them have given me three excellent dishes in a row. I’ve since returned the book to the library and bought my own copy” – a reader’s comment
4) The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World
Brief Notes:
If you read this book, you may think twice about eating farmed beef or pork again. This book is an expose of some of the unethical animal rearing practices in the American food industry.
John Robbins, heir to the Baskin Robbins ice cream fortune, chose the uncharted path of being an evangelist for an eco-conscious, plant-based lifestyle.
This well-researched book contains hard-hitting facts. For those who care deeply about the environment, it is a very educational and fascinating read.
“This book absolutely blew me away. Critically acclaimed author John Robbins earns full marks in terms of his passion to social justice, his unbridled commitment to quality scientific evidence, and highly-readable, compassionate, and straight-forward writing style. In every sense of the term, he has earned the title of “food prophet” – a reader’s comment

Brief Notes:
This is one of my health and nutrition resources. A must read for non-nutritionists who have an interest in learning more about the science behind nutrition.
Everything from vitamins and minerals to facts about fats and cholesterol, and eating healthy foods. There is a section on macrobiotics and raw foods. It is one of my top health and nutrition books.
“I’m a professional, but frankly never learned good fundamentals of nutrition. This book really lays out the basics, including all the compounds that nourish our bodies. I was definitely empowered to change my eating habits, understand why some foods are good and bad, and dig down to the next level of detail. This is a great book in the “Idiot’s” series and I would say this is a good book to have around your bookshelf – a reader’s comment

An encyclopedia of health and nutrition. It is prominently displayed on my book shelf where I can touch, feel, and read it anytime! It offers a different perspective of the healing and nutritional properties of foods.
“You are going to love this one. It is clear, in depth, detailed, and a joy to read. It covers each food discussed with a comprehensive explanation of its energetic properties according to Oriental Medicine.
